Last week, "Grok" was released to paying subscribers on X. In collaboration with our tech partner Skill Leap in Illinois, USA, we've conducted an initial quick review of Elon Musk's new Generative AI model.
For those of you who just want the headline, here it is: You don’t need this yet - Grok hasn’t delivered anything we haven’t seen before.
For those interested in more details, read on:
Learnings:
-Grok is a promising start, but the catch-up race in the Generative AI arena is tough.
-Grok is not multimodal (yet) - for example, it lacks file/document upload capabilities and with Grok a chat is deleted once you star a new chat...so save your work...
-Grok features 'fun' and 'regular' modes
- the difference is subtle, and the 'fun' mode is not consistently entertaining.-Its strongest function is composing emails, but it’s not reliable for research.
-Sources: Links in Grok (when provided) are not clickable, and most do not directly lead to the source when pasted into a browser.
-Grok requires a premium+ subscription to X (USD 16/month) - twice the cost of the normal X premium.
Conclusion: Grok delivers 'just okay' functionality, which is underwhelming considering its cost - especially since similar services are available for free with ChatGPT and Bing Chat. However, if you're a frequent user of X, the convenience of a 'one-stop-shop' might justify the extra expense.
Remember, it's an Elon Musk venture... he tends to improve rapidly, so stay tuned.
